The 2000-2006 BMW E46 M3 came equipped with staggered tire configurations across all factory packages. Narrower front tires were paired with wider rears to maximize rear lateral grip on the rear-wheel-drive platform while preserving front steering response. Factory tires across all configurations carried the BMW Star(*) specification designation, meaning the tire manufacturer engineered them to specific BMW ride and handling targets rather than as off-the-shelf consumer products.

BMW employed dual-sourcing for the OE tires on the E46 M3, switching between Michelins, Continentals, and Bridgestones depending on when the vehicle rolled off the assembly line. After 20 years, the OEM tires have all long been out of print. The BMW Star designation means the tire was tested and certified against BMWβs noise, ride, and handling standards, and that the tire manufacturer paid for that certification. You do not need a BMW Star tire to replace your existing tires and obviously cannot replace them with the OE tire since it is no longer in production.
This guide provides a comprehensive reference for compatible tire sizes across the 18-inch and 19-inch wheel diameters. For detailed wheel fitment information including offset recommendations and suspension clearance, see the E46 M3 Wheel Fitment Guide. DSC/FTM Diameter Tolerance
The E46 M3 uses an indirect Flat Tire Monitor (FTM/RPA) that infers pressure loss by comparing relative rotational velocities at the four ABS wheel speed sensors. This system is integrated with the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), which continuously tracks the front-to-rear wheel speed ratio. A significant mismatch in rolling circumference between front and rear causes the system to misread normal driving as wheel slip, triggering false traction control interventions.
The factory 18-inch configuration targets a front-to-rear diameter delta of just 0.06 inches, effectively a matched pair. Keeping front-to-rear rolling circumference within approximately 1% of the factory baseline is the meaningful DSC-compatibility target for street cars. Square tire setups achieve a 1:1 ratio automatically, eliminating this constraint entirely while enabling front-to-back tire rotation to extend tread life. See the tire size comparison calculator for calculating overall diameter across sizes.
18β Staggered Recommendations
The 18-inch staggered configuration is the factory base and the most common aftermarket choice. The OEM pairing is 225/45R18 front and 255/40R18 rear. The 235/40R18 F / 265/35R18 R pairing is a popular step up, providing a wider contact patch front and rear while remaining compatible with OEM+ wheel sizes. The 245/40R18 F / 275/35R18 R combination is the performance street standard, commonly matched with 18x9β front and 18x10β rear wheels.
Listed below are matched tire models available in the most common E46 M3 setups. More staggered pairs for consideration can be found in the 18β Staggered Pairings table.
Extreme Performance Summer
Track days, autocross, and maximum dry grip. Extreme Performance Summer tires deliver the highest lateral G capability but wear quickly on the street, require warm operating temperatures, and are unsuitable below approximately 40Β°F. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup was the original CSL-spec tire, but since then, the rise of the βSuper 200sβ has given way to many capable compounds.

Max Performance Summer
The optimal choice for spirited street driving and occasional track use. Max Performance Summer tires balance dry and wet performance with reasonable treadlife and cover both daily and track duties without the operational constraints of extreme compounds.
Prices updated June 2026. Actual prices may vary.
Ultra High Performance All-Season
UHPAS tires provide year-round capability without sacrificing meaningful performance. Note that the E46 M3βs rear-wheel-drive layout makes all-season tires adequate for light winter conditions only. Anything beyond light snow demands dedicated winter tires on a separate set of wheels.

The Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus earns our recommendation. Both the Conti DWS and Michelin Pilot Sport AS lines are perennial favorites among consumers.
18β Square Recommendations
Square setups run identical tires on all four corners, enabling full front-to-back tire rotation to increase overall tread life and eliminating DSC rolling circumference sensitivity entirely. The most popular square sizes are 265/35R18 and 275/35R18, which pair with 18x9.5β and 18x10β wheel widths respectively and sit close to the OEM front diameter.

19β Staggered Tire Recommendations
The 19-inch staggered configuration was the factory option on the ZCP Competition Package and the CSL. The ZCP and CSL OEM pairing is 225/40R19 front and 255/35R19 rear. The CSL ran the same tire sizes as the ZCP on a slightly wider 19x8.5β ET44 front wheel and was fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cups at the factory.
Listed below are matched tire models available in the most common E46 M3 setups. More staggered pairs for consideration can be found in the 19β Staggered Pairings table.

19β Square Recommendations
Running a square setup on 19-inch wheels is less common than 18-inch given tire selection and thinner sidewalls, but it remains viable for dedicated track configurations where rotation and even wear matter. Visit the 255/35R19 tire size table for more size options.

Winter Tires
Dedicated winter tires on separate wheels are the safest approach on a rear-wheel-drive car of this performance level. A narrower contact patch cuts through snow and slush more effectively than a wide summer tire. A popular E46 M3 winter setup uses 17x8β wheels at moderate offsets with 225/50R17. 18-inch wheels in a square 225/45R18 setup are also a reasonable alternative.

Before purchasing 17-inch wheels, verify brake caliper clearance. The OEM single-piston calipers clear most 17-inch wheels, but aftermarket big brake kits may require 18-inch minimum. Tire Rack has an assortment of 17, 18, and 19-inch winter wheel and tire packages for your E46 M3.
If re-using the 18-inch or 19-inch OE wheels as a winter set or moving to a square winter setup, some of the tire options are:

Tire Pressure and TPMS Recalibration
The factory cold pressure targets are 33 psi front and 35 psi rear for the 18-inch base configuration. The 19-inch configuration targets 35 psi all around. These are the placard pressures the FTM system calibrates against.
The FTM system must be manually recalibrated whenever tire pressures are adjusted, tires are rotated, or wheels are swapped:
- Park on a flat, level surface and set all four tires to the recommended cold pressure from the B-pillar door jamb sticker.
- Insert the key and rotate to Position 2 (accessory ON).
- Locate the FTM button on the center console switch panel below the climate controls.
- Press and hold the FTM button for 4-6 seconds.
- Release when the tire pressure warning light on the instrument cluster illuminates solid yellow/amber.
- Drive. The system calibrates automatically within a few miles and the warning light will reset itself.
Important Fitment Notes
Tire size alone does not determine whether a setup will fit the E46 M3. The following additional factors affect real-world clearance:
Wheel Width: A 265/35R18 tire mounted on an 18x9.5β wheel will have a different sidewall profile and contact patch shape than the same tire on an 18x8.5β wheel. See the E46 M3 Wheel Guide for validated width-to-tire combinations.
Wheel Offset: Lower offsets push the tire outboard toward the fender. The E46 M3βs factory front ET47 is intentionally conservative to protect the front scrub radius. Dropping below ET30 on the front increases tramlining sensitivity and wheel bearing load.
Suspension Height: Factory ride height provides maximum clearance. A 25mm drop on coilovers may turn a borderline size into a rubbing issue, particularly at full steering lock on the front.
Staggered Front-to-Rear Matching: When running a staggered setup, verify that the front and rear overall diameters are within 1% of each other for reliable DSC operation. Use the Staggered Pairings appendix to check stagger ratios before purchasing.
